Study with the UNSW Beach Safety Research Group

We are looking for motivated Honours, Masters and PhD students

Are you passionate about the Australia’s coasts and waterways? Would you like to contribute to research to keep people safe when they’re out enjoying time in and around the water?

The UNSW Beach Safety Research Group has opportunities to study at Honours, Masters, and PhD level across our areas of expertise.

As an interdisciplinary group we have connections across several schools and faculties at UNSW. We regularly partner with academics, not-for-profit organisations, government, and industry groups, both within Australia and internationally, to conduct research that has real-world application to saving lives. Our world-leading research is regularly published in top-tier journals and is highly cited.

We welcome expressions of interest from domestic students (Australia and New Zealand) and international students.

These are some of the broad areas of research we currently engage with:

  • Beach safety

  • Climate change

  • Coastal hazards

  • Coastal geomorphology and management

  • Community awareness and risk perception

  • Drowning prevention

  • Education and training (both for the general public and professional rescuers including lifeguards/lifesavers)

  • Emergency services and response

  • Epidemiology

  • Program design and evaluation of safety campaigns and messaging

  • Science communication and outreach

  • Evaluation of technology

  • Visitation and participation at aquatic locations

We are open to discussing related areas of academic research. Please contact us if you have an idea that is inter-related to these areas of research.
