Samuel Cornell

PhD Student, School of Population Health, UNSW Sydney

Sam is working with the BSRG on a PhD which seeks to determine the efficacy and effectiveness of using location-based social media safety messaging to reduce injuries and fatalities at aquatic locations, popular with Instagram users. Before commencing the PhD, Sam previously worked with the BSRG as a research assistant on a qualitative project identifying the emotional and physical responses that people caught in a rip current experience. He has had a convoluted and interesting work history, having worked as a pool lifeguard as a teenager, trained as a Navy Diver in his early 20s, and then going on to University to study Physiological Science. He then completed a Master of Science by Research in a public health discipline before moving to Sydney.

Whilst living in Sydney he has worked across varied public health research programs including cardiovascular risk assessment and school-based ehealth activities, among various other beach safety topics. Sam is an active patrolling member of the Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club, an avid runner, swimmer and cycler, and enjoys writing.
